Sean’s interests lie in determining and controlling defects at interfaces and in bulk materials to manipulate electrochemomechanical properties.  For example, in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and three way catalysts (TWCs), there is an exchange of oxygen between the environment and the material.  The rate of this exchange is crucial to maximizing SOFC power and TWC efficiency and it has the potential to be modified by controlling the interfacial and bulk electronic and ionic defect nature and concentration.  Additionally, an expansion of the lattice occurs upon decrease in oxygen content, known as chemical expansion which can result in failure of devices if not properly understood or accounted for.  Another example is in radiation detection technology, where defects can be manipulated to increase device sensitivity (maximize dark resistivity) but must be carefully controlled to avoid electron/hole trapping (adverse effect on mobility-lifetime).

Research is currently underway to examine the relationship between defect concentrations in high temperature oxide bulk and thin film materials to electrical and mechanical properties using electrochemical (impedance spectroscopy), mechanical (dilatometry, nano-indentation), and chemical  (thermo-gravimetry) measurements. In addition, studies are being performed to characterize defect chemistry and defect effects on detector performance in metal halide materials for radiation detection.
