The Electroceramics Group's primary goal is to characterize and understand key electronic, microstructural, and optical properties of advanced ceramic materials.

Research activities center on the fabrication and characterization of crystals, ceramics and glasses for electronic devices, lasers, electrochemical energy conversion, sensors and actuators. Of special interest is the role that defects play both in controlling the electrical and mass transport properties of these materials and their corresponding optical properties. In particular, we are interested in understanding the mechanisms which control fast ion conduction in solid electrolytes, rectification at electrically active grain boundaries, the atmosphere sensitivity of semiconductor interfaces, and photo-assisted dissolution of semiconductors.

Examples of present programs include

BaTiO3 Based Piezoelectric Actuators

Optimization of Ceramic Oxygen Permeation Membranes

Properties and Applications of PrxCe1-xO2-d

Langasite Acoustic Gas Sensor
